On August 17th Mrs Wingham of 7, Back Church Street, Hapton, received a letter from a soldier named Private H Holmes, of the King's Royal Rifles, who is in the Boundary Park Hospital, Oldham asking her if she had any news of her husband, Private Thomas Wingham, (7806). When he was wounded on the 26th July he was lying at the entrance to the trench from which his platoon had to retire, but Holmes never saw Private Wingham return, and was informed by a Red Cross bearer that Wingham was wounded.
