48069 Rifleman Harold Parkinson,

3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade.

The Defence Headquarters at Wellington, New Zealand have provided the following information: - 48069 Rifleman Harold Parkinson was born in Lancashire on the 21 December 1890, the son of Joseph and Phoebe Ann Parkinson of Oeo Road, Auroa, New Zealand. Rifleman Parkinson enlisted into the New Zealand Army at Hawera on the 25 January 1917 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action on 6 December 1917, and is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ypres. His body lies in Grave III, Row I, Plot 23.

He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals, which were issued to his father in 1921 and 1922 respectively.

His brother 48070 Rifleman Herbert Parkinson enlisted at the same time, and was posted to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He was wounded in action on the 6 December 1917, which later resulted in the loss of a leg.

Herbert was also awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
